Merging Shipping Rates from Different Vendors/Warehouses

Overview

With Dropship/Ship Manager you may have different carriers being used by the various vendors/warehouses you have setup. Let’s assume you have 2 warehouses with 2 different carriers for the purposes of this tutorial.  In the Cart view in Magento if you had products from both these warehouses in the cart by default its not going to know what rates to show, as each of the carriers has different shipping methods (e.g. UPS has Ground, USPS has Parcel Post) and it won’t know how to combine the rates.

It wont show a breakdown in the cart view as WebShopApps believe this would complicate shipping for the customer and possibly lead to abandoned carts as the space available is too small to show all the detail required.  In the Checkout view you have a choice on showing rates per warehouse/vendor, or displaying ‘merged’ rates where the shipping prices are added together.

So, we combat this by providing a way for you to set up rules for merging shipping carriers/methods together. This is under the tab ShipMgr/Dropship->Combine Shipping Methods. If you have multiple carriers differing per warehouse and are not getting rates I suggest you read this article and understand how you want this to work.

If all your products are shipped via the same carrier then there is no need to set up merged rates, they will be shown using the carrier name.

Setup

To setup merged pricing follow these steps

1.    Firstly define your warehouses and associated shipping methods using steps above

2.    Navigate to ShipMgr/Dropship->Combine Shipping Methods in admin

3.    Click Add Definition

4.    Enter shipping method title and description. The Title is what the customer will see. For example below we are setting up a way to combine Next Day rates, so lets call it Next Day

5.    Click tab Carrier Mapping

6.    Define the shipping methods that will apply to this combined rate – here we are combining FedEx Overnight and UPS Next Day Air

7.    Click Save

Now on the frontend you will be oblivious to the fact that different shipping methods are in use underneath.

Use with Freight Carriers

If you have set a generic name for the Carrier you must ensure a combine rule is set up based on this Generic name. You will see in the list as an available shipping method.

If using a 3PL such as Cerasis where you are showing cheapest rate rather than having to set up each combination we recommend you use the Generic Name feature in Freight Settings (under Shipping Settings) and then combine that way.
